What is Polishing and Airflow and how is it done?
It is a cleaning and polishing process to remove plaque and discoloration on the surface of the teeth. While polishing is done with special brushes, pastes and tires that do not scratch the tooth enamel, airflow technology is applied by spraying compressed air, water and specially structured dust particles.
Can I find a hygienist practicing dental care in Turkey?
There are no universities or professions in Turkey that provide education on this subject.
Is Airflow the best teeth cleaning treatment?
Dental cleaning is planned according to the needs of the individual. There is no superiority of one method over another. Airflow is one of the most frequently used methods in dental surface cleaning procedures applied by professionals called hygienists abroad. However, in our country, all oral and dental cleanings are performed by dentists.
Dentists primarily focus on the removal of attachments that form in areas that patients cannot see. Because the cause of gum diseases is plaque, tartar, etc. accumulated on the tooth and root surfaces. Treatments called polishing, polishing and airflow can be applied after the attachments adhered to the tooth tissues are removed or to patients who do not have any tartar-like attachments on their teeth.
The reason why we evaluate polishing and airflow applications under a separate heading and on a country basis is that our patients think that these applications, which we can explain as professional brushing, are the most important part of the cleaning process. This is because these procedures remove the external discolorations on the teeth (smoking, tea, etc.), which is the most visually understandable and desired result for our patients. However, it should not be forgotten that this care, which is performed without the first stage (tooth surface cleaning, curettage and detoxification when necessary) and includes cleaning of visible areas, may be insufficient in terms of gum health. It is not correct to proceed to superficial treatment without deep treatment in the patient who needs it.
Should airflow be applied to every patient?
“So should airflow be applied to every patient?”
As Lotus Dental, we do not apply airflow to every patient. We recommend airflow application in case there are areas that we cannot reach during routine cleaning (interdental, dental recesses). Because airflow devices work on the basis of spraying very fine particulate powders on the tooth surfaces and during this process, a very intense amount of dust is released into the air. Although this dust aerosol can be eliminated with powerful aspirators and ventilation, it can pose a risk to the health of clinic staff and patients. For this reason, the use of airflow devices has been discussed again during the Covid 19 pandemic.
