The prosthetic teeth (dental dentures) to be made on the implant can be applied as removable or permanent according to the patients’ needs and wishes, unless the conditions fulfill the medical requirements.
How long should I wait for dentures after implants?
In cases where the jaw bone is sufficient, the fusion of dental implants applied with a simple operation with the bone is called osseointegration. The prosthesis can be safely applied on the implants integrated with the bone. These periods, which are defined as 2-3 months in the lower jaw and 4-6 months in the upper jaw for conventional loading in the literature, were defined as follows by the ITI (International Team of Implantology) with the consensus decisions in 2018:
- Immediate Loading: The attachment of prostheses in contact with the opposing jaw (in occlusion) to the implants within one week following the implant operation.
- Immediate Restoration: The attachment of prostheses that are not in contact with the opposing jaw (not in occlusion) to the implants within one week following the implant operation.
- Early Loading: The attachment of prostheses to implants within 2 months after the first week following the implant operation.
- Conventional Loading: It defines the type of loading after a healing period of at least two months following the placement of dental implants in the jawbone.
In the conventional approach, the recommendation and clinical practice regarding the healing period is 2 months in the lower jaw and 3 months in the upper jaw. These periods may be longer or shorter depending on the type of surgery performed and whether or not bone augmentation is performed.
Nowadays, clinics with deep experience and expertise in implant treatment apply (immediate loading) protocols, which is a delicate procedure in some cases. Spc. Dr. Erdem Kaya’s clinical thesis study has shown that it is possible to shorten this period. However, it may not always be possible to create the clinical environment and working standards of the technician team created in this study. How to care for implants?
The cleaning and care you will apply to implant prostheses is no different from that of dentures on teeth. However, there are special brushes, interface care tools and devices that should be used for cleaning implant prostheses.
